Twelve males and one woman, ages 36 to 69, are being investigated by the police for their alleged involvement in illicit gaming and non-compliance with safe distancing measures (SDM).
Officers from Jurong Police Division conducted an operation at a business unit along Bukit Batok Crescent about 1.45 a.m. on 14 August 2021 and discovered 13 people allegedly gathering and engaged in gambling-related activities.
Under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020, the 13 people will be investigated for non-compliance with SDM.
Two males, ages 36 and 48, were also detained as part of the investigation for allegedly utilizing the flat as a common gambling house.
A total of eight additional males, ranging in age from 37 to 69, are also being probed for allegedly gambling in a similar gaming establishment. As case evidence, gambling-related memorabilia was confiscated.
The offence of using a location as a common gambling house is punished by a fine of $5,000 to $50,000 and a sentence of imprisonment of not more than three years under the Common Gaming Houses Act.
Gambling at a common gaming establishment is penalized by a fine of not more than $5,000, or by imprisonment for not more than six months, or by both.
Those found guilty of non-compliance with SDM under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020 may face a fine of up to $10,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
Investigations are ongoing.
