A 16-year-old Singaporean pleaded guilty on 23 November to seven charges, including being involved in an unlawful society and voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means
Another 10 more charges were being considered for his sentencing, with the teenager due to return to court on 14 December for his sentencing.
He had attacked another 16-year-old with a karambit knife and permanently disfigured the victim’s face as a result.
The teenager cannot be named as he is under 18 and protected by the Children and Young Persons Act.
What happened?
The 16-year-old was approached by someone by the name of Fred, who introduced himself as the “headman” of an unnamed gang.
He recruited the teenager to join his gang, which reportedly operates at Block 143 Teck Whye Lane.
The teen wanted to take revenge on rival gang members who had assaulted him in a previous incident.
He contacted several of the rival gang members and arranged to have a meeting with them on 11 June, near Block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah at a playground.
He brought 4 others with him to the meetup, aged between 15 and 29, and was handed a karambit knife by one of them.
The teenager met up with the rival group at a pavilion nearby and punched a 15-year-old boy from the rival gang in the face before chasing after him with the karambit in his hand.
The 15-year-old then asked a member of the public to call the police and an ambulance, as he waited for their arrival.
The 16-year-old who was chasing him then went back to the pavilion and attacked the other rival members there.
He swung the knife at one of the boy’s face and kicked and punched another person.
The police soon arrived and the perpetrator then fled then scene, he was however arrested the following day.
Permanently disfigured
The boy who was attacked by the knife was conveyed to NUH and underwent surgery – he sustained a deep cut on his face, from his left upper cheek to the back of his ear, as well as a shoulder abrasion.
