195 Caught in SG Nightlife Crackdown on Illegal Vaping, Some Devices Laced with Dangerous Drug

Singapore’s nightlife scene has come under the spotlight after a massive multi-agency enforcement blitz exposed rampant illegal vaping at entertainment outlets. Between 15 and 23 August 2025, more than 270 officers from the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) were deployed across 151 pubs, KTV lounges and bars. Over 1,600 patrons were checked, leading to 195 individuals being caught for e-vaporiser offences.

Authorities seized over 340 e-vaporisers and related parts, with six pods later confirmed to contain etomidate, a powerful anaesthetic drug. Offenders ranged in age from 17 to 61, highlighting the widespread reach of illegal vaping across Singapore’s nightlife districts.

Etomidate Vaping Pods Spark Health Concerns

The discovery of etomidate in vaping devices has alarmed health authorities. Starting 1 September 2025, the drug will be classified as a Class C controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act. First-time offenders found abusing it will undergo mandatory rehabilitation of up to six months, while repeat offenders face arrest, mandatory supervision and even long-term detention at the Drug Rehabilitation Centre.

Health experts warn that inhaling etomidate-laced vapour could lead to dangerous side effects, including loss of consciousness and long-term health complications. HSA’s Assistant Group Director, Ms Jessica Teo, cautioned: “With enhanced penalties taking effect, offenders caught with such products will face tougher consequences, including prosecution and rehabilitation.”

Singapore Nightlife Raids Uncover More Illegal Activity

The operations went beyond just vaping offences. Nine men were arrested for suspected gang-related activities under the Societies Act. In Geylang, two women were detained for immigration and registration violations. Separately, a 26-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman wanted by the Police were also arrested.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Leon Chan said the raids reinforced the Government’s strong stance against illegal vaping and organised crime in nightlife establishments. “Officers will continue to proactively look out for e-vaporisers, especially those containing harmful substances, in joint operations with HSA and CNB,” he said.

With vaping already banned in Singapore under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act, the addition of etomidate-linked cases underscores the public health and safety risks tied to unregulated e-vaporisers. The crackdown also signals Singapore’s determination to keep its nightlife sector safe and free from harmful substances.
