2 Boys Investigated After Entering Restricted MRT Cabin And Triggering Alarm On Train

Two boys are being investigated after allegedly forcing their way into a restricted area of an MRT train and triggering an onboard alarm, prompting intervention from train operations staff and police.

The incident came to light after videos circulated on social media showing the pair opening a partition door located at the rear cabin of an MRT train. One of the boys was seen repeatedly pressing a control button inside the restricted compartment, while another could be heard shouting before the door was closed.

The videos were later removed from social media platforms, but transport operator SMRT confirmed that the incident had taken place earlier this year.

Incident Occurred On North-South Line

According to SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai, the incident happened on 21 February aboard a train travelling on the North-South Line.

Following a review of CCTV footage, SMRT confirmed that the boys had gained unauthorised access to the rear train cabin, which is normally restricted from public access.

Their actions activated an onboard alarm system, immediately alerting the train captain stationed at the front cabin.

The train captain subsequently informed the Operations Control Centre, allowing staff to respond quickly to the situation.

Station Staff Alerted After Alarm Activated

After receiving the alert, station personnel at the next stop were instructed to investigate the matter.

The two boys reportedly disembarked at the following station before further action could be taken on the train.

SMRT said a police report was lodged on the same day, and the matter was referred to the authorities for investigation.

No injuries were reported, and train services were not significantly affected by the incident.

SMRT Warns Of Serious Safety And Security Risks

SMRT stressed that it takes incidents involving unauthorised access to restricted train areas very seriously.

According to Lam, restricted compartments and operational sections of MRT trains contain equipment that is critical to the safe functioning of the rail network.

Entering these areas without authorisation can create significant safety and security risks, both for those involved and for other commuters travelling on the network.

The transport operator added that reckless behaviour involving train systems could potentially disrupt operations and compromise passenger safety.

Public Reminded To Respect Restricted Areas

Transport operators regularly remind commuters that restricted sections of trains and stations are not accessible to the public for safety reasons.

Authorities have also warned that tampering with railway equipment or entering controlled operational areas may result in enforcement action.

The latest case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting safety regulations while using Singapore’s public transport system.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
