Two people were found dead after a fire erupted in a flat at Block 173, Lorong 1 Toa Payoh on the evening of 22 July. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed the incident in a Facebook post, stating they responded to the emergency at around 7:30pm.
When SCDF personnel arrived at the scene, they found the living room of a second-floor unit engulfed in flames, with thick smoke filling the entire flat. Firefighters immediately entered the unit and extinguished the blaze using a water jet.
Victims Pronounced Dead at the Scene
During the firefighting operation, two individuals were discovered unresponsive inside the smoke-filled unit. Firefighters quickly carried them out to safety, but both were pronounced dead on-site by a paramedic.
The SCDF did not release the identities of the deceased, and investigations into the cause of the fire are currently ongoing.
The incident shocked residents in the area, many of whom were unaware of the severity of the fire until emergency vehicles arrived. Some reported smelling smoke or hearing sirens, but did not expect the tragic outcome.
Fire Safety Concerns Raised in Wake of Tragedy
This latest fatal fire has reignited concerns about fire safety in densely populated estates, particularly in older HDB blocks. Residents are reminded to avoid overloading electrical outlets, turn off appliances when not in use, and keep corridors and escape routes free of obstruction.
Authorities have yet to determine if the blaze was accidental or otherwise. Fire investigators are working to establish the source and whether any safety lapses contributed to the tragedy.
The community in Toa Payoh has expressed their condolences, with some residents seen leaving flowers and lighting candles near the block.
SCDF continues to urge residents across Singapore to remain vigilant, perform regular checks on electrical items, and participate in fire drills when possible. Anyone with information about the Toa Payoh fire is encouraged to come forward to assist with ongoing investigations.
