2 MEN TRIED TO SMUGGLE CONTRABAND CIGARETTES INTO SG ON A SAMPAN

According to a police media release, 2 Indonesian men were charged with unlawful entry after they caught entering Singapore illegally with a sampan.

Both were arrested on the 16 Nov 2020 after the police received a tip-off from a member of the public. The whole process took about 2 hours and 300 cartons of contraband cigarettes were found in their possession during the arrest.

After facing their charges in court, both men were handed over to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority for further investigation in regards to the contraband cigarettes that were found in their possession.

If convicted for illegal entry, both men could face a jail term up to 6 months with a minimum of 3 strokes of the cane. For the offence of possessing contraband cigarettes, they could be jailed for up to 6 years, fine up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded.
