The official social media channels for the event confirmed the news at 5:11 PM, stating that the participant had successfully finished the race but required immediate medical attention afterward. Despite receiving treatment on-site, the individual was subsequently transported to Singapore General Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

This incident marks the third time in recent years that a participant has died following the completion of a half marathon at this event. In 2011, 22-year-old Malcolm Sng Wei Ren succumbed to acute coronary insufficiency after finishing the 21.1 km race, with an undetected abnormal coronary artery contributing to his death. Similarly, in 2016, 28-year-old John Gibson experienced sudden cardiac death due to arrhythmia shortly after completing the race.

The 2024 edition of the SCSM featured a range of races, including the full marathon (42.195 km), half marathons, and shorter 5 km and 10 km events. The marathon commenced at 4:30 AM, with professional athletes expected to complete the course in just over two hours, while amateur runners had up to seven and a half hours to finish.

As the community processes this tragic news, many are calling for increased awareness and support for participants’ health and safety during such demanding events. The event organizers have been contacted for further details regarding the incident and any measures that may be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
