
A 24 y.o man was charged in court today (3 August 2021) for damaging NDP decorations near punggol walk the day before.
The man is known as Ahmad Abdullah (Wan Ahmad Yusof), and he is facing charges for committing mischief and carrying an offensive weapon in public.
The incident apparently happened at 0130 hrs on 2 August 2021.
He was caught by the police at Blk 211A Punggol Walk, and a kitchen knife with a 15cm-long blade and a pair of scissors was reportedly found on him.
Police officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division detained him after receiving information from the public that someone cut and destroyed our National Flag.
The police also said in their early investigations that he had “damaged multiple Singapore national flags and decorative banners displayed in the vicinity of Punggol Field, Punggol Central and Punggol Walk”
However, Ahmad was only charged for destroying the banner.
He will be remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for an assessment of his mental health.
A court date has been set for him on 17 August 2021.
If he is found guilty for possessing an offensive weapon under the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, he would face the possibility of being jailed up to three years and given at least six strokes of the cane.
