A 24-year-old man has been arrested by Singapore Police for his alleged involvement in a loanshark harassment case at a residential unit along Bedok North Road, highlighting the authorities’ ongoing efforts to combat illegal moneylending and harassment.
Food Sauce Used in Loanshark Harassment Incident
On 30 June 2025 at around 4.10pm, the Police were alerted to a shocking act of loanshark harassment where the main gate and door of a Bedok flat were splashed with food sauce. Such acts of vandalism are often used by illegal moneylenders to intimidate debtors and their families, creating fear and distress within the community.
Thanks to swift ground enquiries and the use of images from Police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division and Central Police Division quickly identified the suspect. He was arrested within two days of the report being made, showcasing the effectiveness of Singapore’s law enforcement in tackling crimes that threaten public safety.
Suspect Linked to Multiple Harassment Cases
Preliminary investigations suggest that the man may be connected to other similar cases of loanshark harassment. During the arrest, officers seized one mobile phone, believed to be a key piece of evidence in the ongoing investigations. The suspect is expected to be charged in court on 4 July 2025 under the Moneylenders Act 2008.
For first-time offenders, loanshark harassment carries severe penalties: a fine between S$5,000 and S$50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, and up to six strokes of the cane.
Police Remind Public to Stay Vigilant
The Police reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on loanshark activities, warning that anyone who vandalises property or disrupts public peace will face harsh consequences. Members of the public are strongly urged not to engage with loansharks and to report any suspected illegal moneylending activities by calling ‘999’ immediately.
