27 PEOPLE BEING PROBED FOR ALLEGED OFFENCES AFTER EASING OF NIGHTLIFE RESTRICTIONS

The Singapore Police said on 29 April that a total of 27 people are being investigated for a slew of offenses following the easing of restrictions on nightlife businesses.

The Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Tourism Board, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Enterprise Singapore, the Singapore Food Agency, the Singapore Land Authority, and the Sentosa Development Corporation conducted checks at 406 public entertainment outlets islandwide from 19 April to 26 April, to ensure a safe resumption of nightlife businesses.

14 licensed and unlicensed public entertainment and nightlife outlets were found to have committed several breaches under the Public Entertainments Act, the Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act, and the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Reopening – Control Order) Regulations.

Two of the outlets were given closure orders for breach of SMMs and are also liable for fines or prosecution, according to the police.

They had failed to implement checks to verify a patron’s vaccination status before allowing entry, and they also failed to minimize physical interactions between customers and staff.

A total of 23 people were fined for SMM breaches.

The 27 people are being investigated by the police for providing public entertainment without a valid license, being a member of an unlawful society, causing annoyance while drunk and unlawful remote gambling, among other offenses.

One of the establishments caught flouting the rules was an outlet at Middle Road, they were allegedly operating as a bar but only had permission to operate as a restaurant.

The operator is set to be investigated for allegedly providing public entertainment without a valid license, and a pair of headphones, a mixer console, a disc jockey controller and other audio equipment used to play recorded music were seized by the police.

The police added that “the outlet’s operator was also purportedly found to have supplied liquor outside of its licensed premises and had failed to implement a system of checks to verify a customer’s vaccination status before permitting entry.”
