A 36 year old man who was recently arrested for posing as a Gynaecologist on Facebook asking women to send photos of their genitals to him under the pretext of medical and research purposes has been handed 9 new charges in court today (Nov 19).
29 more women who allegedly are victims of this case has emerged, said the prosecutor who asked for the case to be adjourned to a later date so that investigations could be further continued.
The man, also known as Ooi Chuen Wei now has a total of 10 counts of cheating by impersonation and all of them were committed between April 2020 and October 2021.
Modus Operandi
Ooi acted under the guise of ‘Dr Janice Lee Yan Hooi’ from Gleneagles hospital, scamming women to send him photos and videos of their genitals.
The name ‘Dr Janice Lee Yan Hooi’ however did not show up after a check was conducted on the Gleneagles hospital website and also the National Registry of doctors.
260 images and 40 videos were allegedly sent to Ooi from the victims he managed to dupe.
Current situation and Penalties
Ooi was first charged in court last Saturday (13 Nov) and had been held in remand since then, but was offered a bail of $15,000 today.
He would be back in court on Dec 16 to undergo trial.
A jail term of up to five years, a fine or both could be sentenced to Ooi if he is found guilty of cheating by impersonation.
