Lim Meng Hwee, a 29 year old Singaporean, was given an imprisonment term of 11 weeks on 28 Apr 2023 for helping his ‘chicken’ girlfriend rent a condo for her to operate as a brothel.
Background
Lim met his girlfriend, a 36 year old Chinese national, on messaging platform WeChat around December 2019 and about half a year later in June 2020 realised that she is working as a ‘chicken’.
He got together with her in June 2020, at the time where he found out that she was working as a ‘chicken’.
She asked him to help her rent a condo
In May 2020, his girlfriend asked for his help to rent a condo in the area of Mount Sophia.
This aroused the suspicion of Lim, who suspected that she was working as a ‘chicken’.
He began to go online to confirm his suspicion and his suspicion was confirmed when he found advertisements of her marketing her ‘services’.
She admitted that she was working as a ‘chicken’ after he confronted her and despite being in knowledge of her job and being in knowledge of what she would be using the condo for, Lim still proceeded to rent the unit on behalf of his girlfriend.
His girlfriend provided services in the condo rented by Lim till she was caught in a Police raid in Aug 2020
Lim rented the condo on 24 May 2020 and passed the keys over to his girlfriend, who used the unit to provide services to her clients.
He also received $700 from his girlfriend for the unit’s internet and utility bills.
The $700 was part of the money she earned from providing her services.
Police then raided the unit on 20 Aug 2020 which put a stop to her services.
His girlfriend told on him to the authorities
After his girlfriend was caught, Lim went to delete all the correspondence from SMSes, on WeChat and Whatsapp between them on his phone.
His girlfriend was then said to have told on him to the authorities, according to court documents.
In total, Lim pleaded guilty to:
- One charge of cheating the unit’s owner
- One charge of contravening the Women’s Charter for renting the unit to use as a brothel.
An additional charge for obstructing the course of justice was also taken into consideration in court.
