Residents in a quiet Ghim Moh neighbourhood were startled by a series of loud explosions late at night, leading to the arrest of three individuals suspected of illegally setting off fireworks.
According to the Singapore Police Force, the incident took place at a multi-storey car park located at Block 16A Ghim Moh Road at around 11:15pm. Officers were alerted after multiple residents reported hearing explosive sounds echoing through the estate.
Initial investigations revealed that several fireworks had been discharged without authorisation, triggering concern among those living nearby.
The authorities subsequently launched ground enquiries, eventually identifying and apprehending the suspects believed to be involved in the act.
Residents Alarmed By Explosions In Residential Area
The trio arrested consists of two men aged 25 and 33, along with a 16-year-old male teenager. They were taken into custody over a two-day operation spanning Mar. 22 to Mar. 23.
Police investigations indicate that the group allegedly set off multiple fireworks within the residential vicinity, causing significant noise disturbance and distress to nearby residents.
In Singapore, the use and possession of fireworks are tightly regulated due to safety concerns, particularly in densely populated housing estates. Incidents like these are treated seriously as they pose potential risks to public safety and property.
Residents in the area had reportedly been alarmed by the sudden blasts, with some fearing more serious incidents such as explosions or fires.
Potential Jail Time And Heavy Fines If Convicted
If found guilty, the individuals could face severe legal consequences under Singapore law. Unauthorised use of explosive materials carries a penalty of up to 36 months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to S$50,000, or both.
The case highlights ongoing enforcement efforts by authorities to deter illegal activities involving controlled items such as fireworks. Public safety remains a key priority, especially in residential zones where such actions could lead to injuries or unintended fires.
Investigations into the matter are still ongoing, and further details may emerge as authorities continue to assess the full extent of the incident.
