Bus Brakes Suddenly To Avoid Car Travelling Against Traffic In Hougang, 1 Passenger Taken To Hospital
A bus in Hougang was forced to make an emergency stop after a car travelling from the opposite direction suddenly entered its path on Aug. 2.
The incident happened at about 8.50am at the junction of Hougang Avenue 9 and Hougang Avenue 4, involving an SBS Transit service 329 bus.
Three passengers reportedly suffered minor injuries after the bus driver applied the emergency brakes to prevent a collision. One of them was subsequently taken to hospital, while two others declined further medical attention.
Car Suddenly Entered Bus’ Path
According to SBS Transit, the bus was preparing to make a right turn at the junction and had the traffic light in its favour.
However, a car travelling in the opposite direction unexpectedly moved into the bus’ path. The bus driver reacted quickly and applied the emergency brakes in an attempt to avoid hitting the vehicle.
The sudden braking caused three passengers on board to sustain injuries. While the collision was avoided, the incident still resulted in one passenger requiring medical attention.
One Passenger Taken To Hospital
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said that one person was conveyed to Sengkang General Hospital following the incident.
SBS Transit confirmed that the passenger was hospitalised and said the individual was receiving outpatient treatment. The public transport operator also expressed its wishes for the injured passenger’s speedy recovery.
Two other passengers who sustained minor injuries declined to be taken to hospital.
Passengers Transferred To Another Bus
Images shared online showed an SCDF ambulance at the scene, with several people gathered nearby. Some of those seen at the location appeared to be passengers who had been affected by the incident.
The remaining passengers were subsequently transferred to another bus so they could continue their journeys.
The incident highlights the potential risks faced by commuters when vehicles make unexpected movements on busy Singapore roads. Even when a serious collision is avoided, sudden emergency braking on a public bus can still result in passengers being thrown off balance and suffering injuries.
Drivers approaching junctions are reminded to remain alert and follow traffic signals, particularly when turning or travelling through intersections where buses and other vehicles may be crossing their paths.
