A major road accident involving a trailer and three lorries along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) on the night of May 11 left 17 people injured and required emergency rescue efforts to free three individuals trapped inside vehicles.
The incident occurred along the AYE towards Tuas, with authorities alerted at around 9.20pm. The collision led to significant disruption on the expressway as emergency services rushed to the scene.
According to the Singapore Police Force, those injured were all conscious when taken to hospital and ranged in age from 31 to 50.
The scale of the crash prompted a multi-agency response, with lanes on the expressway cordoned off while rescue and recovery operations were carried out.
SCDF Used Hydraulic Equipment To Free Trapped Victims
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the accident at about 9.25pm and arrived shortly after the collision was reported.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that three individuals were trapped inside the damaged vehicles.
Rescue teams used hydraulic rescue tools to safely extricate the victims from the wreckage, a standard procedure in serious road traffic collisions involving heavy vehicles.
Images and videos circulating online showed multiple ambulances and fire engines lining the expressway, with at least two lanes sealed off to facilitate emergency operations and ensure the safety of responders.
The rescue operation highlights the importance of rapid-response capabilities when dealing with multi-vehicle highway crashes, particularly involving heavy commercial transport vehicles.
17 Victims Sent To Two Hospitals As Police Investigate
Following the rescue operation, a total of 17 people were transported to hospital for treatment.
Six injured individuals were conveyed to the National University Hospital, while another 11 were sent to the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
Authorities confirmed that all injured persons were conscious at the time of transport.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and investigations are ongoing.
Expressway accidents involving multiple heavy vehicles are relatively uncommon but can result in serious disruptions due to the size and weight of the vehicles involved, as well as the high traffic volume on major routes such as the AYE.
Motorists have been reminded to exercise caution, particularly during night-time driving conditions when visibility is reduced and fatigue may be a factor.
Further updates are expected as investigations by the Singapore authorities continue.
