On April 24, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) announced a recall of three types of goat cheese products due to the likely presence of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, which can cause food poisoning. The recall was ordered for various Fromagerie Blanc’s raw milk goat cheese products after the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed issued a notice.
The recalled products include Chabi Cendre (180g), lot number 069, with an expiry date of May 8, 2024, Chabi Blanc (180g), lot number 070, with an expiry date of May 9, 2024, and Palet Cendre (150g), lot number 067, with an expiry date of May 5, 2024. All three items are from France, and the recall is being carried out by the importer, Symphony W&C Pte Ltd.
Food that are at higher risk of being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria include unpasteurised or raw dairy products, soft cheese including those ripened by mould, refrigerated meat spread, smoked fish and ready-to-eat deli meats and sausages. Consumers are advised not to consume the implicated products and to seek medical attention if they have done so and become unwell.
Listeria can be fatal to pregnant women, infants, and the immunocompromised. The SFA advises consumers to contact their point of purchase for inquiries. The agency also reminded consumers to handle and store food properly to prevent contamination and to maintain good personal hygiene when handling food.
This is not the first time that goat cheese products have been recalled due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. In 2021, a recall was ordered for various goat cheese products sold in Singapore due to the same reason.
Food safety is a top priority for the SFA, and the agency takes a serious view of any lapses in food safety standards. Importers, retailers, and food establishments are responsible for ensuring that the food they sell is safe for consumption. The SFA conducts regular inspections and takes enforcement actions against those who breach food safety regulations.
Consumers are also encouraged to be vigilant and to check for recall notices before purchasing or consuming food products. They can also sign up for food recall alerts on the SFA’s website. By working together, we can ensure a safe and healthy food supply in Singapore.
