My 30-year-old friend, who works as an insurance agent, just asked his dad to buy him a Rolex. He said it was to look “professional.” His dad just looked at him like he was crazy and said no. My friend was so embarrassed and quickly excused himself.
I’ve known my friend since secondary school, and he’s had an obsession with expensive things since then. He always wanted the biggest, flashiest, most expensive items. But now, he’s asking his dad, who’s retired with a fixed passive income, to buy him a Rolex.
I understand why he wants one. He thinks it will make him look more successful and important. He works hard and he’s had success in his career, but I guess he wants to show off a bit. Maybe he’s trying to keep up with his co-workers, who all seem to have nice watches.
But I don’t think it’s a good idea to ask for a Rolex.
It’s not like he can afford it. Plus, it’s just kind of tacky. I’m sure his dad was amused by the request, but he wasn’t going to say yes.
My friend’s reaction was pretty sad.
He looked embarrassed and ashamed. He mumbled something about not knowing how expensive they were and quickly left. I’m sure he was embarrassed and wanted to get out of there as soon as he could.
I think my friend was trying to show off and he got a swift reality check.
He thought he could get away with asking his dad for a Rolex.
What a loser.
