30 Y.O MAN STOLE FROM SYED ALWI SHOP, THEN NEXT DAY GO BACK TO SAME SHOP TO STEAL AGAIN

The Singapore Police Force said in a press release that they have arrested a 30-year-old man for two cases of theft in dwelling.

He purportedly stole from the same retail outlet along Syed Alwi Road twice, on two back-to-back days, and was arrested at the scene with the stolen items, worth about $435 being recovered.

MAN TO BE CHARGED FOR THEFT IN DWELLING

The Police have arrested a 30-year-old man for his suspected involvement in two separate cases of theft in dwelling.

On 7 May 2023 at about 1.40pm, the Police were alerted to a case of theft at a retail outlet along Syed Alwi Road. A 30-year-old man was arrested at scene. The stolen items, amounting to about $435, were recovered.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was allegedly involved in another case of theft in dwelling reported on 6 May 2023 at the same retail outlet. Police investigations are ongoing.

The man will be charged in court on 9 May 2023 for theft in dwelling under Section 380 of the Penal Code, 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 7 years and a fine.

The Police take a serious view of shop theft cases and offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law. The Police will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the community to prevent and deter cases of shop theft. The Police would like to remind retailers to remain vigilant against shop thieves, especially when large crowds are expected. Retailers are advised to adopt the following measures:

  1. Ensure a good line of sight for the displays by using an appropriate shop layout;
  2. Display advisory posters or signage against shop theft;
  3. Display expensive merchandise in locked showcases or at prominent locations (e.g. near cashier counters);
  4. Install CCTVs with recording system at the entrance/exit of the store to capture the facial features of shoppers; and
  5. Deploy adequate security personnel to patrol the premises in luminous vests for deterrence.
