A 34-year-old man, Thevandran Shanmugam, died on 5 April after being allegedly pushed down a flight of stairs at the Concorde Shopping Mall at Orchard Road on 26 March.
He had reportedly fractured his skull in the incident and the man who allegedly pushed him down the stairs, 27-year-old Muhammaed Azfary Abdul Kahar, was charged in court for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
The Straits Times reported that the incident happened on 26 March at about 6.30 am.
Azfary is being accused of pushing Thevandran in the chest and causing him to fall down backwards down a flight of stairs outside Concorde Shopping Mall.
The victim had suffered multiple fractures in his skull and was brought to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where he received treatment before he succumbed to his injuries and died on 5 April.
Azfary was then charged in court the next day after the incident, with voluntarily causing grievous hurt – court documents also didn’t state if the two men were acquainted with each other.
If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine and caning – he also faces an extra 178 days of imprisonment because he was under a remission order at the time of the incident.
Thevandran was seen in a photo circulating on Whatsapp lying near a stairwell in a pool of blood outside Rumours nightclub
The nightclub posted on their Instagram story clarifying that the victim was not at their premises at the time of the incident, and that he had been at another bar in the same building.
They said: “Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of (the deceased). We are extremely sad and sorry for their loss.”
“On the other hand, to the potential scriptwriters and directors circulating stories regarding the unfortunate incident, let me disappoint you by saying the deceased didn’t come to Club Rumours that fateful night.”
“He was at a bar located in the same building and the incident happened after hours. Stop speculating further and give the family space to grieve.”
