In a shocking turn of events, a 34-year-old man, Muhammad Nabil Rashid, has recently pleaded guilty to assaulting Malaysian celebrity Ahmad Kamal Ahmad Adli, known as Kamal Adli, during a fan meeting at the Singapore Expo. This incident has not only exposed the darker side of fan enthusiasm but has also raised questions about the mental state of the attacker.
Muhammad Nabil Rashid, a Singaporean, openly admitted to assaulting Kamal Adli with an extendable baton. His guilty plea on January 31 included charges of assault and criminal force. The surprising twist? Nabil’s admission was rooted in delusions, claiming that Kamal Adli had molested a female relative of his, according to The Straits Times.
The Fateful Day at the Singapore Expo
On March 12, 2023, Kamal Adli participated in a celebrity meet-and-greet session at a bazaar event in the Singapore Expo. The event was widely promoted on social media, drawing attention from fans. Nabil, nursing the delusion that Kamal Adli had harmed his relative, decided to attend the event to confront the actor.
Armed with an extendable baton, Nabil, disguised with a cap and face mask, approached Kamal Adli during the event. What was initially perceived as a photo opportunity turned into a harrowing assault. Nabil struck Kamal Adli on the head, face, and arm with the baton, leaving the actor with facial wounds requiring four stitches.
Post-assault, Nabil pulled down his face mask, smiled, and walked away. Members of the public and the actor’s family intervened, chasing and pinning down Nabil until the police arrived. Both Nabil and Kamal Adli were taken to Changi General Hospital (CGH). However, the shocking saga continued as Nabil spat at Kamal Adli while at CGH, displaying a complete lack of personal connection.
Mental Health Evaluation
Following the assault, Nabil was remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), where a psychiatric evaluation by Dr. Cheow Enquan revealed a likely delusional disorder and antisocial personality disorder. Despite these diagnoses, the doctor emphasized that Nabil was aware of the wrongful nature of his actions during the attack.
Dr. Cheow’s evaluation highlighted Nabil’s lack of insight into his mental illness, refusing medication despite the doctor’s recommendations. The doctor deemed medication necessary to mitigate the danger Nabil posed, especially concerning Kamal Adli’s safety.
Past Encounters with the Law
This disturbing incident is not Nabil’s first involvement with the law. Deputy Public Prosecutor Cheah Wenjie disclosed Nabil’s history of prior convictions, including offenses related to violence, such as voluntarily causing grievous hurt and criminal intimidation.
In an unrelated case on April 2, 2022, Nabil spat at a woman’s face in Sembawang, escalating the situation by also spitting at and restraining her older husband.
He will be sentenced at the end of this month (28 February).
