Man, 39, Arrested After Teen Allegedly Injured with Pliers During Yishun Dispute
A 39-year-old man has been arrested after a confrontation in Yishun allegedly left a 14-year-old boy with minor injuries.
According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), the incident took place along Yishun Ring Road on the evening of Aug. 2. Officers received a call for assistance at around 7pm and were dispatched to the scene to investigate.
Preliminary investigations found that the man and the teenager had reportedly been involved in an earlier disagreement before the situation escalated into a physical altercation later that day.
Dispute Reportedly Stemmed from Personal Mobility Devices
Police investigations indicate that the disagreement centred on the man’s power-assisted bicycle (PAB) and the teenager’s e-scooter. During the incident, the man’s personal property was allegedly damaged, contributing to tensions between the two parties.
The confrontation is said to have intensified when the man allegedly armed himself with a pair of pliers and used them against the teenager. The 14-year-old sustained superficial injuries during the encounter.
Authorities subsequently seized the pair of pliers believed to have been used in the incident as part of their investigations. The teenager’s injuries were described as minor, although the case remains under police investigation.
Court Charge Scheduled
The 39-year-old suspect is expected to be charged in court on Aug. 4 for the alleged offence of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means.
Under Singapore law, voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon or means is a serious criminal offence. A conviction may result in a prison sentence of up to seven years. Depending on the circumstances of the case, offenders may also face a fine, caning, or a combination of these penalties.
As with all criminal proceedings, the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Police Reiterate Zero-Tolerance Stance on Violence
The Singapore Police Force has reiterated that it takes a firm stance against acts of violence that threaten public safety.
In a statement, the police stressed that individuals who resort to violence to settle disputes can expect swift enforcement action. They added that members of the public should resolve disagreements through lawful means rather than allowing conflicts to escalate into physical confrontations.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further details may be disclosed during the court proceedings.
