40 Y.O WITH 20-YEAR HDB LOAN SAYS WORKING LIFE IS JUST WORKING TO PAY DEBT

Single, degree holder, turning 40 next year, have a 3rm HDB flat to my name with a 20yr home loan. Have a very average paying job with 20+ days leave and thankfully I get to go home on the dot on most days (I guess that’s the pay off for having average pay). I can’t help but see a pattern in most folks lives (including my own of course).

Save money/invest so you can FIRE

  1. Wait for the next block leave so you can go overseas/have a staycation for 1-2 weeks max.
  2. Repeat No. 1 & 2.

Anybody realise that this is what we’re going to be doing till you’re in your 50s and manage to FIRE. And if you’re unlucky then you’re destined to do this to your 60s (provided you’re not retrenched before then). How do you all find more meaning to life than this? I’m sure if we had unlimited funds we’d be doing way better things or travelling the world.

Netizens’ comments

  1. I think all of us are doing the same thing, except we place emphasis on the other things in our lives. I enjoy going home after work to meet my S/O for a jog and dinner.
I look forward to trying out new restaurants on weekends. I’m excited to spend time on my hobbies with whatever free time as well.
Granted, I have no kids so I have some time to myself after work. Basically, you have to give meaning to the things that you do yourself!
  2. You gotta find things to do that you enjoy in your everyday life. Idk if one can go about daily life without pursuing hobbies, then suddenly live a fulfilling life after achieving FIRE.
Just give new and different things a try. Go for a nice walk after work, try different routes, appreciate the surroundings. Try different recipes whether it’s cooking or baking. Do random things to kill time like colouring, painting, reading. Learn a relatively “easy” instrument like ukelele or harmonica. Idk man just explore new things during your free time and find the joy in it no matter how trivial or mundane. I find it more sustainable than waiting around for the “big moments” like that one or two holiday every year.
