A man was seen in a viral video that has been circulating online on social media, blatantly vaping with an illegal vape device inside an MRT cabin.
The Singapore Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said on 25 February that the 45-year-old man has since been fined for his offence.
HSA said that they were alerted to the incident on 14 February following the virality of the social media post.
The man was seen in the video sitting down on the floor of the MRT cabin without any footwear on and holding on to the vaporiser device.
He then took a long puff from the vape device as he fiddled with his mobile phone, before looking up at the other commuters around him.
SMRT said that the incident took place on 4 February at about 11.30 pm along the East-West Line, and MRT staff received a report of a male commuter vaping inside the train heading towards Pasir Ris.
The president of SMRT trains, Lam Sheau Kai, told Channel NewsAsia that they then immediately checked with the staff from other stations and went through the CCTV footage for the man, and a police report was then lodged.
The man was then identified with help from the police, and HSA said that the man claimed that he found the vape on the streets and has since discarded the device.
He was issued with a composition fine for the illegal use of the vaporiser after further investigation.
Potential penalties for vapes
Under section 16(2A) of the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act (TCASA), it is illegal to possess, purchase and use vaporizers in Singapore as of 1 February 2018.
Persons found guilty of this offence can be fined up to $2,000.
