A woman was sentenced to 10 months in jail after stealing from a senior citizen.
According to CNA, the woman was assigned to the elderly woman as an NTUC Health Befriendere.
48-year-old Choo Lay Ping pleaded guilty to one charge of cheating
The offence of Cheating is under Section 420 of the Penal Code, is punishable with an imprisonment term that may extend to 10 years, and a fine.
Background:
Choo was hired by NTUC Health to record the conditions of senior citizens which included their living conditions and any kinds of help that elderly persons might require.
Back in 2020, Choo was assigned to an 84-year-old woman and she visited the woman weekly.
On one occasion the elderly woman told Choo to use her ATM card to draw money to buy medicine and she draw $1,000 from the woman’s account.
Choo also helped the elderly woman read her letters and found out that the elderly woman had received a government payout.
She hatched a plan to cheat the woman of her payout, on 26 different occasions the woman would ask for the elderly woman’s ATM card and pretend to check if the government payout is in her account yet.
She used this method to pocket over $18,000 from the elderly woman’s account.
She was finally caught when the elderly woman went to an ATM to update her bank book, after realising that there were several unauthorised transactions she made a Police report.
Choo could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined.
