5 ARRESTED FOR IMMIGRATION RELATED OFFENCES

According to the Singapore Immigration & Checkpoint Authority (ICA), 4 Bangladeshis and 1 Singaporean were arrested for their suspected immigration-related offences such as overstaying and remaining in Singapore without a valid permit.

The ICA conducted an islandwide operation on the 13 Aug 2020 at residential areas such as Moulmein, Novena, Geylang and River Valley. The 5 arrested are aged between 25 to 57 years old. 4 of them were found working in the cleaning industry.

Investigations are ongoing.

According to the law, anyone convicted of employing an Immigration offender could face a jail term up to 2 years, fined up to $6,000 or both. For those convicted for overstaying, they could face a jail term up to 6 months with 3 strokes of the cane.
