51-Year-Old Man Found Dead On Bench In Jalan Besar, Police Suspect No Foul Play
A 51-year-old man was found motionless on a bench in Jalan Besar on Monday (7 Sep), after a cleaner noticed that he had stopped breathing.
Police were called to the area at around 4.25pm following the discovery at 36 Upper Weld Road, which is located just off Jalan Besar.
The man was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). Preliminary investigations found no indication of foul play, though police investigations remain ongoing.
Cleaner Found Man Unresponsive In Jalan Besar
The man had reportedly been seen in the area the day before his death.
A cleaner working nearby said he regularly encountered people sleeping in the back alley over the four years he had worked there. On Sunday (6 Sep), he noticed the 51-year-old man resting on a metal box in the alley.
The cleaner suspected that the man might have been intoxicated at the time, but noted that he appeared to be breathing normally.
When the cleaner returned to the area the following day, he saw the same man again. However, this time, the man appeared motionless and was no longer breathing.
The cleaner then contacted the police for assistance.
Police Vehicles & Blue Tent Seen At Scene
A 70-year-old man, identified as Mr Lu, told local Chinese media that he had been cycling nearby when he noticed several police vehicles around Upper Weld Road.
The back alley running alongside the road had reportedly been cordoned off, preventing members of the public from entering the area.
When reporters arrived at around 5pm, at least two police vehicles could reportedly be seen at the location.
A blue tent had also been erected in the alley, while a number of onlookers gathered nearby to find out what had happened.
The location is close to Jalan Besar, an area known for its busy streets, shophouses and residential developments.
No Foul Play Suspected In Man’s Death
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said it received a call for assistance at approximately 4.25pm on Monday.
Officers found a 51-year-old man lying motionless on a bench at the location.
A paramedic from the SCDF later pronounced him dead at the scene.
Based on preliminary investigations, police do not currently suspect foul play in connection with the man’s death.
The circumstances surrounding the death have not been publicly disclosed, and police investigations are continuing.
As the case remains under investigation, further details may be released once authorities establish more information about what happened before the man’s death.
