Singapore authorities have intensified enforcement efforts against immigration offences, with six additional individuals arrested in a follow-up operation targeting overstayers.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority confirmed that the arrests took place between March 16 and April 6, building on earlier joint operations conducted alongside the Ministry of Manpower. These latest arrests are linked to a prior case that saw 11 Nepalese nationals detained during coordinated enforcement actions.

The six individuals, aged between 24 and 47, are believed to have remained in Singapore beyond the validity of their visit passes. Authorities are continuing investigations to determine if any parties had knowingly provided shelter or employment to these individuals.

STRICT PENALTIES FOR OVERSTAYERS AND EMPLOYERS

Under Singapore law, overstaying is treated as a serious offence with firm penalties aimed at deterring abuse of the immigration system. Offenders may face a jail term of up to six months. In more severe cases, this can be accompanied by a minimum of three strokes of the cane or a fine of up to S$6,000.

Beyond imprisonment and financial penalties, immigration offenders are also deported upon completion of their sentences and barred from re-entering Singapore. This strict approach reflects the country’s zero-tolerance stance on immigration violations.

Equally significant are the consequences for those who assist such offenders. Individuals found guilty of harbouring or employing overstayers can face imprisonment ranging from six months to two years, along with fines that may reach S$6,000.

Authorities have reiterated that enforcement does not stop at the offenders themselves but extends to anyone facilitating their illegal stay, reinforcing accountability across the board.

CONTINUED ENFORCEMENT TO SAFEGUARD SINGAPORE

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority emphasised that inland enforcement operations will continue as part of broader efforts to maintain border security and public order. These ongoing crackdowns are aimed at ensuring that immigration rules are upheld consistently.

Members of the public are encouraged to play a role by reporting suspected immigration offences through official channels. Community vigilance remains a key pillar in supporting enforcement agencies in identifying and addressing such cases.

Singapore’s firm and sustained approach underscores its commitment to safeguarding national security while maintaining a fair and regulated system for foreign visitors and workers.
