A 60-year-old man was sentenced to 20 months jail on 22 June for 1 count of penetration of a child under the age of 16 while they were in an exploitative relationship.
Another similar charge was taken into consideration during sentencing.
He had reportedly befriended his grandson’s 14-year-old friend and sexually assaulted him at a staircase.
What happened?
The man was picking up his grandson from school at around November/December 2019 and met the boy.
He offered the boy a cigarette and they started talking before he asked the victim for his phone number.
The two would then meet about 6 times a week, for about 3 hours each time; the boy would also occasionally ask the man to help him buy cigarettes.
The boy’s father even met the man in January 2020, and asked him to advise the victim, as well as his younger brother.
The man agreed and told him that he treated his son and his brother as his own grandchildren.
On 19 January 2020, the man met the victim at a void deck, and the two smoked and chatted.
He then brought the boy to a staircase landing where he asked if he could perform a sexual act on him.
The boy said no but the man persisted and removed the boy’s pants, performing the sexual act for about 30 seconds.
The boy remained silent throughout and didn’t react as he didn’t know what to do.
The victim was at a police station on 29 February 2020 for a separate incident, when he then told the officers that he was sexually assaulted.
