The court heard that Liew had a history of similar offences, dating back to 2002.
On Nov 18, 2019, Liew boarded a double-decker bus and sat behind a 21-year-old woman. Less than 10 minutes later, he reached forward and touched her under her armpit, near her left breast.
The victim quickly turned around and left her seat, going down to the lower deck of the bus. Liew himself, alighted at the next stop.
The court documents did not mention how the offence was brought to the attention of the authorities.
Previously served jail terms for same offence
The prosecution sought a four-month jail term, noting that Liew had a history of committing similar offences.
Liew had been caught and sentenced to jail terms in the past for offences of a similar nature.
Claimed that he was ‘ashamed’ of what he did
Liew, who appeared in court without any legal representation, said that he was “ashamed of himself”. He also expressed concern for his family and his mother’s condition.
The court heard that Liew had a history of molesting women on buses, including a 20-year-old woman in 2002, a 17-year-old woman in 2012, and the same 27-year-old woman in 2018.
He was sentenced to three months’ jail in 2002, eight weeks’ jail in 2018, and six weeks’ jail in 2019.
Liew could have been given three years’ jail, fined, or caned, or any of them for his offences.
This sentence serves as a warning to potential offenders that such behaviour will not be tolerated in Singapore.
