The Discovery

The lifeless body of the 61-year-old man, the sole occupant of a flat at 128 Bukit Merah View, was found around 11:35 am on Sunday, December 17. The grim discovery was made after an 84-year-old neighbour, disturbed by a foul odour persisting for two days, alerted the police.

The police are currently conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. At present, there are no suspicions of foul play.

Lived a lonely life

The deceased, who reportedly lived alone, had no relatives visiting, even during significant occasions like Chinese New Year. According to Shin Min Daily News, the flat’s interior revealed signs of solitude, with a medical gurney, crutches, and a wheelchair in the living room.

A neighbour, identified as Mr Chen, shared insights into the deceased’s past. Originally residing with four family members, the man’s younger siblings moved out after getting married, leaving him alone with his mother. Following his mother’s demise, he became the sole occupant of the unit.

Mr Chen noted that the deceased was known for keeping to himself and rarely interacting with neighbours. Despite residing in close proximity, neighbours claimed never to have seen anyone visit the man, even during festive periods like Chinese New Year.

While a female friend regularly brought him food, interactions were reportedly brief, and the deceased’s younger sister, who appeared at the unit after being notified of his passing, highlighted the man’s limited social connections.

Ongoing Police Investigations

The discovery underscores the challenges faced by elderly individuals living alone, with limited social interactions, and the importance of community vigilance in such cases.
