A 64-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly attempted to snatch a handbag from a 72-year-old woman at a bus stop along Balestier Road.
According to the Singapore Police Force, officers were alerted to the incident at around 8.40pm on 16 July.
Investigations found that the elderly woman was waiting at the bus stop when an unknown man allegedly tried to grab her handbag.
Suspect Fled Empty-Handed
The alleged snatch attempt was unsuccessful, and the man fled the scene without taking anything.
Following investigations, police identified the suspect and arrested the 64-year-old man on 18 July, more than a day after the incident.
He is expected to be charged in court on 20 July for the offence of snatch theft.
Snatch Theft Carries Jail And Caning
Under Singapore law, a person convicted of snatch theft may face:
- Between 1 and 7 years’ jail
- Caning
The police also reminded members of the public to stay calm if they encounter such incidents, observe the suspect’s appearance and any distinguishing features if it is safe to do so, and contact the police as soon as possible.
