According to the Police media release, 6 men and 1 woman are facing investigations after the Police conducted a two-day raid in areas across Singapore.
The raided areas included handphone shops located at Bukit Merah, Bukit Batok, Jalan Besar and Geylang Road.
The raid which lasted from 30 Nov to 1 Dec unveiled 7 individuals between the ages of 31 and 50 who are suspected of registering SIM cards illegally.
In street terms, this kind of SIM card is known as “Space Cards” or “太空卡”.
This typically means that the numbers cannot be traced to the person holding on to the SIM card as the registration would be typically done with a foreigner’s particulars.
The Police said that the SIM cards were pre-registered using the identities of foreigners without their knowledge and the SIM cards are kept and sold to those who needed “anonymity”.
These kind of SIM cards are typically used by loan sharks and other illegal business.
Penalties
If they are found guilty of unauthorized modification of computer material which is under the Computer Misuse Act, they can reach be fined up to $10,000 and/or jail up to 3 years.
