74 Y.O S’POREAN ENTERED SQUID GAME: THE CHALLENGE, ELIMINATED IN FIRST ROUND

In a surprising twist of fate, 74-year-old retiree Danny Yeo found himself amidst the gripping challenges of the Netflix reality show, “Squid Game: The Challenge.”

A Spontaneous Decision to Embrace the Challenge

In June 2022, Yeo, seeking a personal challenge, stumbled upon casting calls for “Squid Game: The Challenge” on Facebook. Without second thoughts, he submitted a one-minute video as part of his application. The freelance actor’s philosophy? Not the popular ‘you only live once’ (YOLO), but rather ‘you only die once.’

The Rigorous Selection Process

Yeo’s journey wasn’t a walk in the park. Multiple rounds of interviews, a thorough health checkup, and a psychiatric evaluation awaited him after his initial application. Only in December 2022 was he confirmed as a contestant, marking the beginning of his adventure.

Lights, Camera, Action in London

Flown to London in January, Yeo, along with 455 other contestants, geared up for the intense competition. The show, produced by British companies Studio Lambert and The Garden, aired on Nov. 22, showcasing the participants’ journey through South Korean children’s games.

A Brief Appearance and an Early Exit

Despite the excitement, Yeo faced an early exit in the first game, “Red Light Green Light.” The challenge required contestants to traverse an open area without getting caught during the “Red Light” period. Unfortunately, Yeo’s age became a disadvantage in the freezing UK aircraft hanger where the game was filmed.

Facing Challenges Beyond the Games

Yeo’s struggle wasn’t just about the game itself; it extended to enduring sub-zero temperatures during the filming. Holding a half-squat position for 20 to 25 minutes in the freezing conditions tested his resilience. Yet, despite the challenges, he expressed gratitude for the experience.

A Diverse Contestant Atmosphere

The show presented a diverse mix of contestants, ranging from youth to seniors above 70. Yeo noted the intense atmosphere, with some participants doing warm-ups before the games. Though victory wasn’t in his cards, Yeo cherished the opportunity to connect with people from around the globe.

The End of One Chapter, the Potential Beginning of Another

Elimination didn’t dampen Yeo’s spirits. In a Nov. 23 Instagram post, he expressed gladness for being part of the contest. Clad in the iconic dark green uniform, Yeo, player No. 164, hinted at his readiness for a potential sequel, stating, “If there were to be a ‘Squid Game: the Challenge 2’, I will apply for it. It was a great experience.”
