Sweet Promises Turn Sour
An 80-year-old man in China has sparked widespread online discussion after revealing how he spent nearly 30,000 yuan (about S$5,600) trying to win the affection of a woman 17 years his junior, only to be abruptly dumped. The octogenarian, surnamed Wu, shared that he was introduced to 63-year-old Ms Zhang through a matchmaker in Henan’s Xinxiang County. Captivated by her constant praise and affectionate words, Wu quickly fell in love.
According to Chinese media, Ms Zhang lavished Wu with compliments, calling him “wonderful and capable” while promising, “As long as you help me settle my debts, I’ll take care of you for life.” Moved by her words, Wu devoted himself to the relationship and tried to make her happy at all costs.
During their three-month relationship, Wu said he handled all the household chores alone, including sweeping, cooking, and washing dishes, insisting on not letting Ms Zhang lift a finger. He believed his efforts and generosity would win her heart.
Relationship Ends Over Pocket Money Dispute
The fairytale ended abruptly when Ms Zhang asked him for spending money. Due to tight finances at the time, Wu offered 100 yuan (around S$19), which enraged her. She reportedly threatened to return to her family home, blocked him on all platforms, and completely cut off contact, leaving Wu stunned and heartbroken.
Wu confessed he had already spent more than 50,000 yuan (around S$9,500) during the short relationship, covering daily expenses and fulfilling Ms Zhang’s requests. Reflecting on the experience, he lamented bitterly, “I regret chasing youth; I was foolish to think she loved me for anything other than money.”
Netizens Urge Caution
The story quickly went viral on Chinese social media, where many netizens criticised both the elderly man’s gullibility and the woman’s manipulative tactics. Comments included: “Even at 80, he’s blinded by love,” “This is classic romance scamming,” and “Don’t think only young people scam; older women can too.”
Some urged Wu to report the matter to authorities, calling it financial exploitation disguised as romance. Others highlighted how vulnerable the elderly can be to emotional manipulation, emphasising the importance of awareness and caution when dating later in life.
Experts advise families to watch for sudden financial losses among elderly loved ones, especially if they are involved in new romantic relationships, to prevent similar heartbreaks and potential scams.
