Madam Lim Ee Chin, an 81-year-old woman, received the Community First Responder Award on August 27, making her the oldest recipient of the award, which is presented to members of the public who stepped forward to render assistance to others in distress and/or to save property.
Madam Lim went to her neighbours’ rescue and helped to put out a fire in their HDB flat on August 9 despite her fear of the raging fire.
The SCDF said that she didn’t hesitate to help out and her selfless act helped mitigate the damages and injuries caused by the fire.
Two other neighbours helped put out the fire but they reportedly didn’t want to be named and declined the award.
Three people were conveyed to the Singapore General Hospital in the aftermath of the fire.
Madam Lim was commended for her selflessness, and the SCDF noted that many might have ran away instead of lending a hand like she did.
The SCDF added: “Madam Lim’s action exemplified bravery and in her own words, the kampung spirit.”
