An 87-year-old man has been hospitalised following an incident involving a personal mobility device (PMD) while crossing the road in Tanjong Pagar last weekend. Details of the Incident

According to eyewitness accounts, the PMD involved in the accident was equipped with a black food delivery box, suggesting that the rider was making a delivery at the time of the collision. Photos shared with the media showed police vehicles at the scene, with officers assisting in the aftermath of the incident. The PMD was found lying on its side on the road, and a red helmet was also spotted nearby, reported Shin Min Daily News

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that they were alerted to the accident at approximately 7:35 PM. The elderly pedestrian was conscious when transported to the hospital, where he was admitted to Singapore General Hospital for further evaluation.

Ongoing Investigations

A 29-year-old male PMD rider is currently assisting police with their investigations into the incident. The case has raised concerns regarding the safety of PMD users and pedestrians, particularly in light of existing regulations.

Under the Active Mobility Act, PMDs are prohibited from being used on roads in Singapore, as they are only permitted on designated cycling paths. In contrast, power-assisted bicycles are allowed on public roads. Violations of these regulations can lead to prosecution by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Recent Enforcement Actions

This incident follows a recent joint enforcement operation conducted by the SPF, LTA, and Health Sciences Authority in the Central Business District, aimed at addressing errant cyclists and PMD users. During this operation, one individual was arrested, and several PMDs, bicycles, and an unregistered vehicle were seized due to various offences, including riding non-compliant PMDs on public roads.

As the investigation continues, authorities are likely to review the circumstances surrounding this incident to ensure the safety of all road users and to reinforce compliance with existing regulations.
