The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said today (22 Feb) that they have rounded up 89 men between the ages of 34 to 87 for their alleged involvement in illegal horse betting activities.
Raids were conducted between 14 Feb and 20 Feb, which ended up in the 89 men rounded up across various locations around the island such as:
- Bedok
- Beo Crescent
- Marsiling
- Jurong West
- Telok Blangah Crescent
- Toa Payoh
The raids were jointly conducted by SPF officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as well as the seven SPF land divisions.
Evidence seized
Evidence which are suspected to aid the illegal betting activities and amounts of cash were seized during the raids.
Such items seized are:
- Mobile phones
- Pens
- Documents for example betting records
- Cash amounts of more than $30,000
Men arrested have various roles
Investigations by the SPF officers have revealed that the men that were rounded up were involved in many different roles in the whole illegal betting case.
Some were bookmakers, some were punters and some were runners.
All of the suspects which were rounded up are all investigated under the Betting Act.
10 of the 89 men are also being investigated under the Remote Gambling Act.
SPF said that investigations are still in progress and they take a stern view on such activities and will not hesitate to take stern enforcement action against offenders in accordance to the law.
Penalties
Offenders who are caught placing bets with illegal bookmakers can be fined up to $5,000 and/or receive an imprisonment term of up to six months.
Offenders involved in bookmaking can be fined between $20,000 – $200,000 and receive imprisonment of up to five years.
Offenders who are involved in unlawful remote gambling can be fined $5,000 and/or receive imprisonment up to six months.
Offenders who provide unlawful remote gambling services can be fined between $20,000 – $200,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years.
