SAF OFFICER FOUND GUILTY OF CAUSING DEATH OF NSF KILLED IN BIONIX

Ong Lin Jie, 30-years-old, a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) captain, was found guilty on 22 November of causing death by a rash act, resulting in the death of 22-year-old full-time NSF Corporal First Class (CFC) Liu Kai.

Liu Kai was driving a Land Rover when he was pinned under the Bionix vehicle, an armoured fighting vehicle, and pronounced dead at the scene back in 3 November 2018.

Ong was also inside the Land Rover at the time when he ordered Liu to overtake the Bionix and failed to keep a safe distance of 30m between the two vehicles.

District Judge Jasvender Kaur said that Ong’s actions were the “substantial or the proximate and efficient cause” of Liu’s death.

Selective amnesia was deliberate

Ong had failed to disclose voluntarily during investigations for more than 5 months that he had ordered Liu Kai to overtake the Bionix.

Judge Kaur said that “when confronted with incontrovertible evidence, he had selective amnesia”, adding that she found his selective amnesia was deliberate.

Ong will be sentenced on 20 December and faces a jail term of up to five years and fined.
