44 year old Balasingam-Chow Yu Hui was given ten days of jail term today (9 Feb) for his failed attempt to film his female colleagues using a toilet cubicle at his workplace.
He had pleaded guilty in court for criminal trespass and trying to insult the modesty of a woman with another two charges taken into consideration during his sentencing.
He had tried to film his female colleagues in the toilet cubicle using a pinhole video camera which he purchased online by fastening it to the white ceiling in the toilet with blu-tack and scotch tape but it failed as it dropped to the ground a while later.
Discovered by female colleague
In May 2019, Balasingam had bought the camera from an online source and proceeded to install it in the toilet in the morning of 25 June 2019 intending to film his female colleagues inside the toilet.
Around 9 am on the same day, a female colleague who went into the toilet noticed an object on the floor and picked it up to check what it was and realised that it was a camera.
She then brought it back to the office to ask if it belonged to anyone including Balasingam, but none of them admitted to it.
A Human Resource (HR) Manager then tried to view what was recorded by the camera and saw Balasingam’s face at the beginning of the recording.
Confessed to HR
Afraid that his actions would be discovered, he went to the HR Manager to confess to what he did.
He added that he got the idea as he had watched Youtube videos on people putting cameras in toilets.
There were five video clips recorded by the camera in total and one of them showed Balasingam installing it for a duration of 1 min 27 seconds.
However, none of the videos manage to capture any of the women doing their businesses.
A police report was subsequently made which led to the Balasingam being arrested.
Court session
Balasingam’s defense had asked for a week’s jail citing that the set up of the pinhole camera was too obvious to the human eye and it was a work of a beginner.
He also added that there were no victims in the crime as none of the videos had any victims recorded successfully.
The crime according to the defense was also not pre planned as Balasingam had only installed the camera a month after the purchase and not immediately.
Balasingam had also went to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for treatment himself just a month after the incident.
The judge refuted these claims saying that Balasingam’s colleagues would have became victims had the lady not found out about the camera at the start and the fact that he had installed it in the cubicle signals his intention of getting some of his victims in states of undress.
