The presence of pests in food premises is unacceptable as pests carry a range of pathogens, which can contaminate food and food contact surfaces.
A netizen who visited Woodlands Drive 50 888 Plaza’s coffee shop which is located beside the supermarket found himself a bowl of delicious noodles topped up with some freshly brewed cockroaches soup.

cockroaches are pests commonly found in the kitchen of food establishments as it contains an array of food items that serve as welcome habitats for these pests. Pests require food, water and shelter to survive, hence food operators need to eliminate these conditions to prevent pest infestation.
Consumption of food and water contaminated by rat and cockroaches may lead to food poisoning and
other infectious diseases.
Food vendors can face 6 demerit points when they are caught with a cockroach infestation. If a food establishment gathers 12 demerit points in 12 months they can be fine and suspended for two or four weeks, or cancelled. All food handlers working in the suspended premises would also be required to attend and pass the Basic Food Hygiene Course again, before they can resume work as food handlers.
