A 36-year-old Indonesian teacher, Herry Wirawan, raped 13 students at a boarding school and impregnated at least 8 of them.
He was initially sentenced to life imprisonment back in February but prosecutors sought the death penalty and chemical castration against him, appealing against the sentence.
The High Court in Bandung, West Java, then accepted the appeal of the prosecutors and the defendant was then sentenced to death.
The judge’s statement said “we accept the appeal of the prosecutors, we hereby punish the defendant to a death sentence.”
Wirawan’s crimes were revealed when he was reported to the police by the family of one of the victims who was impregnated by him.
He had raped the victims over a period of 5 years, with many of them coming from poor families and attending school on scholarships.
Wirawan had pleaded for leniency in the lower courts, explaining that he wanted to raise his kids.
