Pawnshops are often filled with expensive jewellery and watches, these items are often placed on display cabinets for sale and there are often multiple security measures to prevent theft.
However, two men who visited a pawnshop conspired to steal a gold chain after discovering a security loophole.
ZaoBao reported that a 32-year-old and a 34-year-old man were caught after stealing from a pawn shop in Eunos.
Story:
The two men discovered a gap between the jewellery display counters and hatched a plan to perform the heist.
While one of them was distracting the staff, the other would use a pair of chopsticks and grab the gold chain from the counter gaps, the pair managed to steal the gold chain worth S$3,140 and left the pawnshop as if nothing happened.
The duo has a history of crime, reported ZaoBao
The 32-year-old man faces various charges for theft and drug use. He pleaded guilty for 3 of 4 charges.
The 34-year-old man was sentenced at an earlier date for theft, loanshark harassment and assault. He was sentenced to 5 years in jail and 3 strokes of cane.
For theft in dwelling with common intention, which is punished under Section 380 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
The crime carries a penalty of up to seven years in jail and a fine.
