A 51-year-old Chinese national and her 14 -year-old son spent the night at the staircase after being locked out of their rental flat by the landlord.
The woman, Ms Yu, spoke to Shin Min Daily News, and said that she and her son who is studying in Singapore, moved into their rented home at Yishun Avenue 5 on 20 March, they had signed a one year lease.
The mother and son then had their utilities cut on 6 April, and received a note from their landlord telling them to move out by 7 April.
She called the police for help but the landlord still refused to let her into the unit, and having nowhere else to go, she spent the night at the staircase with her son.
She shared that although she had already rented the entire flat for $2.6K a month, the landlord continued to allow other potential tenants to view the unit even after the woman had moved in.
The landlord then sent her a lawyer’s letter dated 31 March alleging that she had violated the tenant’s code of conduct and obligations, which Yu has since denied.
