Cheng Guoyuan, a 46-year-old Chinese national, was charged in court earlier today (16 April) following the brutal slashing of his wife with a chopper on Thursday.
He was charged in court with the attempted murder of his wife.
Cheng appeared in court via a video feed while on a hospital bed, from Tan Tock Seng Hospital, with an investigating officer beside him.
Cheng kept still and quiet during the hearing, and only responded by nodding when the judge questioned him.
He had apparently had an operation in the morning for an injury.
Cheng is set to be remanded for a psychiatric assessment after he gets discharged and is set to return to court on 6 May.
Used a chopper to hack his wife
Graphic videos of the gruesome attack on his wife went viral all over social media and made the headlines in many news reports.
Cheng was seen in the videos hacking his wife with the chopper as she begged for her life, outside a restaurant in Beach Road, now ascertained to be Chong Qing Steamboat.
Restaurant workers stepped up to protect the woman and fend off Cheng from her by throwing chairs, metal signs, bins, and whatnot, in an attempt to stop his attacks on her.
The police eventually arrived and tased him, before he was subdued and arrested.
