A woman in Singapore, 28-year-old Velda Lim Ming, suspected that her boyfriend was cheating on her and falsely reported him to the police for smuggling and selling guns, according to CNA and Zaobao.
Lim was dating Dawson Chng Jie Sheng from March 2018 to May 2019, with the latter being 23-years-old at the time.
Lim was with his family and two other friends in Bangkok, Thailand, on 23 May 2019, of which one of his travel companions was a female.
Lim found out that Chng was traveling with another woman and suspected that he was cheating on her, she then sent him several text messages demanding he proves he isn’t cheating.
She also threatened to report him to the police via her messages.
Lim then used incognito mode on her internet browser to submit a message through the online feedback portal on the Singapore Police Force’s website on 27 May 2019.
She also used a new email account, in an attempt to avoid being traced and identified by the authorities.
Lim said in her message that she believed Chng had an unauthorized armory at either his or his friend, Meltan Tan Shen Kang’s home.
She then added that she had a screenshot where Chng told her that he possessed a gun, attaching a screenshot of the message with Chng referring to a pistol in December 2018.
She also alluded that Chng and one of his friends were bringing in illegal weapons and selling them, asking the authorities to look him up and calling him a danger to the community, as well as proving the police with Chgn and Tan’s addresses.
Lim then submitted another similar message to the police on 28 May 2019 when she saw an Instagram post showing Chng meeting another friend and thinking that no action was taken against Chng.
Chng and Tan’s homes were then raided on 31 may 2019, and during the raid, more than 20 officers across three police units were deployed.
But no incriminating evidence was found in their homes, with both Chng and Tan also being found in the clear after being interrogated by the police.
Lim was revealed to have never seen Chng with a gun or witnessed the “unauthorized armory” that she claimed to have seen, as well as the import and selling of weapons by Chng.
She later admitted to the police that she reported Chng out of anger as she thought he was cheating on her and wanted to teach him a lesson.
She was charged with 2 counts of providing false information to the authorities, and she pleaded guilty to one of them.
She was expected to be sentenced in March 2021 but she then backtracked on her guilt admission before being sentenced and claimed trial.
She was then convicted of her crimes on 26 April and sentenced to 10 weeks imprisonment.
However, Lim is intending to appeal her sentence.
