SMRT said in a statement on Wednesday that the incident happened on 24 May at about 12.10pm, on a north-bound train along the North South Line.

President of SMRT trains, Lam Sheau Kai, said that the fire was quickly put out by a commuter who was there at the time.

He said that their staff were on sit to assist and all commuters disembarked from the train as a safety precaution.

No commuters were injured or required medical aid.
