Ernest Fu Weizhong, 39-years-old, was sentenced on 13 June to one-week imprisonment after pleading guilty to causing grievous hurt by driving in a negligent manner.
He was also banned from holding or obtaining all classes of driving licenses for 2 years after his prison term.
Fu, who is a doctor, had failed to keep a proper lookout while driving and didn’t give way to another car that had the right of way.
He also didn’t stop at a white line before making a discretionary right turn, and it resulted in a crash with another driver, Soon Jin Joke’s car.
Soon was driving at about 76kmh on a stretch of road with a speed limit of 60kmh, and the crash resulted in his mother, 96-year-old Madam Heng Fong Boey, who was seated at the back without a seat belt, suffering serious injuries.
She later died 4 days later after suffering injuries including bleeding in her skull.
Fu is a doctor from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, working as a consultant.
What happened?
Fu was driving on Tampines Avenue 12 on 8 October 2019 at about 8pm, heading towards Tampines Avenue 9 and when he decided to turn into TPE.
He stopped briefly at a junction leading to the TPE turn-off and then made a discretionary right turn.
The green arrow on the traffic light was not on at the time, meaning he was not allowed to make a right turn.
Soon’s car then sped across the junction and crashed head-on with Fu’s front left side of his car and causing the former’s car to roll backwards and hit another car.
Soon’s 96-year-old mother was then thrown forward from the back seat of the car and got wedged in the front seat, and was conscious when conveyed to Changi General Hospital.
There, she was found with multiple fractures and bleeding in her skull, and she then succumbed to her injuries and died on 12 October 2019.
