The Ministry of Health confirmed on Saturday that there were two imported cases of the new Omicron subvariant BA.2.75 in Singapore as of 14 July.

The two cases had recently travelled to India and upon testing positive, immediately isolated themselves.

They have since recovered fully from the infection.

The BA.2.75 Omicron sub-variant, nicknamed “Centaurus”, was first detected in India in early May and had also been detected in other countries such as the US, UK, Australia and Canada.

MOH said that there is no evidence at the moment suggesting the sub-variant has a different virulence of severity than its predecessors.

They also noted that the WHO has classified it as a sub-variant under monitoring.

The WHO’s chief scientist, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, also added that they didn’t have enough samples yet to assess the severity of the sub-variant.

Meaning that there are indications that it might be more transmissible and/or associated with more severe disease, but there is not enough evidence to prove that it is so.
