Veteran Taiwanese singer Yu Tian’s 39-year-old daughter, Yuan-chi, who is also a singer, died from cancer yesterday afternoon, after drifting in and out of consciousness since 18 August.
The 74-year-old veteran singer, most well known for his 1977 hit song Under The Banyan Tree, broke the news to the media outside the hospital, supported by his son Ken.
He said that his daughter appeared alright that morning but her condition suddenly took a turn for the worse, adding that the family wanted to resuscitate her but she had signed a “do not resuscitate” form.
He ceded that “it was better this way”, and that she “wouldn’t be in so much pain anymore.”
Yu Tian said that moments before his daughter died, she didn’t close her eyes, only doing so after he and his wife told her that they have accepted her decision.
He added that he had found a new cancer treatment for her but it was too late.
Begged him to “let her go”
Yu Tian spoke to the media a few days ago, saying that his daughter begged him through her hand gestures to “let her go”.
He said “how could I bear to do so? I told her no and she gestured to me again, asking me to let her go. How can I be so cruel?”
