34-year-old Philip Ong Guo Xiang, was sentenced to 11 months and 2 weeks imprisonment on 27 September after fighting with a passer-by and assaulting his wife.
What happened?
Ong was with his 34-year-old wife near Block 206 Bedok North Street 1 on 28 September 2021, to buy a screen protector, and also to meet their social worker.
The couple were outside the social service office having a smoke break when they heard about the Chinese goddess Guan Yin Ma appearing in the sky, and they started taking photos.
A 62-year-old food delivery rider then passed by and asked them what they were doing, and Ong then told him that they were taking photos of Guan Yin Ma in the sky.
However, the rider couldn’t see any resemblance and called Ong a scammer, before taking photos of the couple and refusing to delete the photos after Ong told him to do so.
The rider then confronted and challenged Ong to a fight, and threatened to beat up the couple if they ever went to Geylang Lorong 20.
Ong then shoved the rider and kicked him in the knee, before a woman who passed by saw the incident and informed the police.
Attacked wife on numerous occasions
Among the other charges that Ong faced, he also pleaded guilty to punching his wife in the eye because he was not happy with her for oversleeping.
He also punched his wife during an argument over how they were going to split the $500 financial assistance that they had gotten from the social service office.
Throwing hot water at his wife because she had allegedly called him an “ah gua”, which the wife has denied; and accidentally hitting a woman in the arm with a traffic cone when he threw it at the wall because he was upset at not being able to find his TraceTogether token at Bedok Point.
Ong said that he had apologised to his wife and she had forgiven him, as he asked for a chance from the judge.
